How Long Does a House Project Take?
Whether you’re in the process of building your dream home or just a new construction project, understanding how long it will take to turn your blueprints into a finished product is important. Understanding your house construction timeline can help you make budgeting decisions and plan for the overall project. The average timeline offers a general idea of the process and is helpful for budgeting purposes, but factors such as design intricacies can increase or decrease your build time.
Foundation
Once excavation and site preparation are complete, the foundation for your new home will be poured. This will likely be either a concrete slab foundation, crawl space foundation, or basement foundation. This stage typically takes between two to four weeks to complete.
Framing
This is a fun phase of the home building process, as you’ll start to see your house taking shape! The construction crew will set up the skeleton of your home, and install window frames, doors, and the roof. During this phase, you’ll also see electrical wires and pipes installed.
Sheetrock/Stucco
During this time, the sheetrock/stucco for your home will be put on, along with trim (such as baseboards and crown molding). Trim and walls are covered in a smooth finish to provide your house with its final look. Installation of interior doors and cabinetry will also occur during this time.
Plumbing, electrical and HVAC
It takes a team of tradespeople to get the major systems in place in your house. This includes installing wires, ducts and all the plumbing fixtures and appliances that hook into these systems. Unfortunately, trimming your budget doesn’t really work for this step because these items are necessary to have a functioning home.
Insulation
Adding insulation is one of the best things you can do to save energy in your home. It will keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The most popular insulation choice is cellulose or foam, which are both made from recycled material and are very cost effective.
Drywall
Using special screws, brackets and joint compound (commonly known as “drywall mud”), construction will hang drywall on the walls of your home. The drywall will be smoothed and textured and can be primed with sealer to allow for painting.
