Buying a Waldorf Play House
Playing house is a fundamental activity for kids that encourages imagination and social skills. It helps children process their experiences in a safe space and allows them to role-play to work through feelings. It’s also a great way for kids to develop creativity, which is essential for problem-solving and innovation later in life. The Waldorf approach to education puts a strong emphasis on imaginative play and considers it the foundation for cognitive development.
Having the right playhouse can help kids with physical, emotional and social growth, says Karri Bowen-Poole, founder of Smart Playrooms, who assessed and tested over 100 products. She recommends looking for playhouses that allow for movement and sensory experience and align with kids’ interests—for example, ones themed around fairy tales, animals or other themes. It’s also important to look for a space that is aesthetically-pleasing, is easy to install and can be moved or reconfigured when the kids outgrow it.
When selecting a playhouse, consider the size of the structure and height. “If it’s too small, kids won’t be able to interact with it,” she says. “And if it’s too tall, they might feel like they can’t climb into it.” The Schillers’ playhouse, for example, is two stories with ten windows and a front porch in Bavarian style, complete with a faux fireplace with a fanciful mosaic mantel. The structure has a large interior that can accommodate multiple children at once and a functioning drawbridge that kids love to raise and lower while making believe they are knights or dragons.
Many of the best-selling playhouses are designed to be used year-round, making them a good investment. Some also come with features such as seating, storage, art and play food to enhance a child’s imaginative play. Others are crafted from durable materials such as natural wood, cedar and composite so they can endure the elements.
To increase the coziness of a playhouse, add rugs. They can protect kids’ feet from the hot sand or ground, and also add color and texture to the space. Adding toys or collectibles to the space is another way to add fun and interest, such as miniature garden tools, books and pinecones or feathers.
Whether your backyard is big or small, you can find a playhouse to fit it. These designs include an array of windows, door sizes and colors, roof pitches, and even lofts. Some even have a TV mount inside to let the kids enjoy their favorite shows or movies. They can even be customized with a name and window graphics for a special touch. Just be sure to check with your local codes before constructing a structure that requires a building permit or adheres to certain design guidelines. Using a contractor can make the process easier and ensure that your playhouse is safe and structurally sound.
