The House Project Timeline
Building a House can be an exciting process, but the journey from blueprints to home can take some time. Understanding the house construction timeline is important for planning and budgeting. It can also help you enjoy the process of watching your dream come to life.
The first step in the construction process is to find land for your new home. Depending on the location and size of the property, this may involve clearing and/or excavating. This step can take several weeks or even months to complete. Once the site has been cleared, the foundation can be built.
Before building can begin, the homeowner and builder must obtain permits from local regulators. This includes a standard building permit as well as any additional permits required for basements, electrical, HVAC and plumbing work. Depending on the location of your new home, you may also need to get permission from your homeowners association or other community leaders.
Choosing the materials for your home is another major part of the design process. Different types of materials cost more than others and will affect the final price of your house. For example, higher quality materials like brick and stone will add to the overall cost of your home. However, lower quality materials like vinyl and cement board products can make your home look less expensive.
Your builder will then pour the footers and foundation for your home. Once the foundation is in place, it will be ready for framing. This will be the skeleton of your house and it will take a couple of months to complete. Once the frame is in place, it will be protected with sheathing. This will protect the house from weather and air leaks while allowing builders to begin installing critical systems.
This stage usually takes a few weeks to complete, but it can take longer for complex houses. During this stage, your builder will install flooring and cabinets. They will also paint walls and ceilings and put in trim and crown molding. The last step in this phase is to add the finishing touches, like closets, kitchen cabinetry, built-ins and lighting fixtures.
Once the house is complete, your builder will perform a walk-through with you to ensure that all of the finishes are in place. Then your house will be ready to move into!
